Bitcoin is the world's first successful decentralized cryptocurrency and payment system, launched in 2009 by a mysterious creator known only as Satoshi Nakamoto. The native currency of the Bitcoin network, called Bitcoin (BTC), has revolutionized digital payments by allowing users to securely transfer money without having to rely on central authorities or intermediaries.
The Bitcoin network is powered by a decentralized peer-to-peer network, where users can exchange bitcoins without needing an intermediary. This public ledger uses a technology known as "blockchain" to record and order all transactions securely and immutably. To ensure that consensus is reached amongst users on the validity of each transaction, computers in the network use a process called proof-of-work (PoW).
Miners validate transactions and secure the network by running specialized machines all day, for which they are rewarded with new bitcoins. Bitcoin miners prioritize transactions with higher fees attached to them as this helps to cover their costs of electricity and maintenance. Every time a user sends a transaction, they must pay a network fee based on the size of their transaction before it can be queued for validation.
